China's MIIT Renews Operating License for Google Valid Until 2012
July 15, 2010
Despite Google's recent strained relationship with China's government, Google confirmed on July 9 that China's MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) had approved its operating license for Beijing Guxiang Information Technology, the operator of Google's China website, for another year until 2012, Reuters reported on July 11. The license approval has solved the monthly dispute between Google and China's government, allowing Google to continue operations in China. More than 200 companies had their licenses renewed this time and names of which were posted on ministry's website at www.miit.gov.cn. China's MIIT, however, was not immediately available for comment.

In January 2010, Google threatened to withdraw from China over censorship concerns. The Xinhua News reported that according to a document, Google received approval after the company agreed that all content will abide by Chinese law and will not deliberately provide lawbreaking content to violate China's telecommunication regulations. In addition, Guxiang agreed that government regulators will have rights to supervise all content provided by the company, according again to Reuters.
